Cats Information You Didn't Know

Following are a lot of cat facts many of you didn't know. So let's go:

People have been keeping cats as pets for the last about 4,000 years now. In the earlier times, they were kept for their ability to hunt, whereas today people desire to keep them because they provide good company to humans.
Though these are not commonly used by people, a group of cats plus kittens is referred to as clowder and kindle respectively.
The home cats are called little cats. These are not the same as large cats, like tigers and lions, as they remain active at night and are able to make a purring sound.
In USA and UK they are today the most preferred of pets.
The feline body & behavior

There are about 48 identified breeds and pedigree of cats in Australia, besides an unending combination of crossbreeds, so that these felines look and behave in an amazingly different way from each other. But still, there are some astonishing physical features in all cat varieties.
It is well-known that cats have 30 and dogs 42 very sharp teeth.
Tapetum lucidum is a layer of tissue in the eyes of cats which is able to reflect and magnify light coming into the eyes, giving them a sharper vision than humans, so that they are able to see six times better when there is less light. Both cats and dogs have a transparent or translucent third eyelid, called nictitating membrane, that closes to protect and moisten the eye.
While human ears have only twelve muscles, cats are blessed with 32 of them. This makes it possible for them to sense the exact location of their prey, like mice, and the sound of the opening of a cat food can. A cat can hear sound frequencies lower as well higher than humans. Their ears also help them to balance themselves and help them get back on their feet right even while falling down - that is how the phrase "Cats always land on their feet" got developed.
Cats are most of the time left pawed.
Cats are more bothered about the texture and smell of the food than its taste, and sometimes can be really bothered about the smell. The licking of a cat can be compared to the rubbing of rough sandpaper on your skin. This is because the tongue of a cat has a thin covering of tiny thorn like barbs that face backwards. This covering guides their food to the rear of their mouth. This coarse surface of a cat's tongue also helps to quickly take in water
Cats are able to draw back their claws. The advantage of this is that they remain sharp which provide them grip when they are climbing. and they are also as an effective weapon. Cats' way of communicating is by rubbing themselves against us. The paws and cheeks of cats contain scent glands, and that scent is passed on when they rub on a vertical surface.
Catnip or catmint is an herb, and 75% cats are genetically sensitive to it. If you find your cat rolling or twisting on the floor, rubbing his face or drooling everywhere, he's been on the catnip.
